Tawas City is a city in Iosco County, Michigan and serves as the county seat. Located on the northwest side of Tawas Bay, the community sits in the eastern portion of the county.[2] The community is located immediately southwest of East Tawas and about 55 miles south of Alpena.[3] The population was 2,005 during the 2000 census.[4] Additionally, the city is adjacent to Tawas Township, but politically and administratively independent.[2]

According to the United States Census Bureau, Tawas City has a total area of 2.1 square miles; 0.4 of which is water. The community uses the ZIP code 48763.[5][6] Tawas City has also been allotted 48764 for P.O. Box use only.[7] The city has been assigned the FIPS code 26-78140.[4]

Geography[]

The city of Tawas City sits on the western shore of Tawas Bay, an inlet of the larger Saginaw Bay. Together with East Tawas, the two communities are collectively known as the Tawases, and are connected to southern portions of Michigan by U.S. Highway 23 which parallels the northern Saginaw Bay and northwestern Lake Huron.[3] Due to the location on the eastern shore of lower Michigan, the area is also called the Sunrise Side.[8]
