Petersburg is a city in western Monroe County, Michigan. Originally founded as Summerfield, it is located in the northern potion of Summerfield Township.[3][4] The community is located about five miles south-southwest of Dundee and seventeen miles west of Monroe.[4] The population was 1,157 during the 2000 census.[5]

According to the United States Census Bureau, Petersburg has a total area of 0.5 square miles. The community uses ZIP codes 49720[6][7]—assigned to Petersburg[8]— and the city has the FIPS code 26-63800.[5]

History[]

Petersburg was named for Richard Peters, a landowner who moved to the area of Summerfield Township in 1824. Of the property he purchased, a portion was sold to establish the community in 1836. Peters later became the first postmaster, naming the community Summerfield after the township. In 1863, however, the community was renamed Petersburgh: the name used when the community incorporated as a village in 1869. Around thirty years later, the name was altered by removing the final "h," thereby changing the name to Petersburg. The village reincorporated as a city in 1969 after one hundred years as a village.[3]
