Oakland County is one of the 83 counties in Michigan. The population of the county was registered as 1,194,156 in 2000, with an estimated 1,206,089 in 2007. It is also considered one of the wealthiest counties in the United States. Its county seat is the city of Pontiac, and it is considered part of Metro Detroit.

Oakland County borders Macomb County, which lies to the east, Wayne County to the south, Washtenaw County to the southeast, Livingston County to the west, Genesee County to the northwest and Lapeer County to the northeast. The county has sixty-two municipalities, ranging from cities to townships.
