East Tawas is a city in Iosco County, Michigan. Located on the north side of Tawas Bay, the community sits in the eastern portion of the county. The community is located immediately northeast of Tawas City and about 55 miles south of Alpena. The population was 2,951 during the 2000 census. Additionally, the city is adjacent to Baldwin Township, but politically and administratively independent.
According to the United States Census Bureau, East Tawas has a total area of 3.3 square miles; 0.5 of which is water. The community uses the ZIP code 48730. The city has been assigned the FIPS code 26-24420.
The city of East Tawas sits on the northern shore of Tawas Bay, an inlet of the larger Saginaw Bay. The bay opens to Lake Huron across Tawas Point from East Tawas. The city is also bound to the north by Tawas Lake and to the southwest by the smaller Tawas City. East Tawas and Tawas City are collectively known as the Tawases, and are connected to southern portions of Michigan by U.S. Highway 23 which parallels the northern Saginaw Bay and northwestern Lake Huron. Due to the location on the eastern shore of lower Michigan, the area is also called the Sunrise Side.
East Tawas has a busy downtown district that features a variety of shops and foodstuffs which cater to both local residences and tourists. The community is largely sustained by the tourism industry, and has events catered to such. Parks, a pier, boating facilities, museums and beaches are all located either in the city limits or within two miles. Additionally, there are numerous restaurants, hotels and bed and breakfast locations to serve tourists who travel through the city. Each year, there is also an art fair, a downtown "sidewalk sale" which fills Newman Street from U.S. 23 to State, and holiday attractions such as tree-lightings, caroling and sales.
The Iosco County News-Herald is based in East Tawas, and is the primary circulant of local news for the county. WZHN (91.3) is also located in East Tawas. This station is part of the Northern Christian Radio Network, and simulcasts the same programming as WHST, located in neighboring Tawas City.
