Au Sable is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Iosco County, Michigan.[3] The community is a part of Au Sable Charter Township, in the northeastern portion of the township.[3] The community is located at the mouth of the Au Sable River, along the coast of Lake Huron. The community, on the south bank of the river, lies opposite the census-designated place of Oscoda.[3] The population was 1,533 during the 2000 census.[4]
According to the United States Census Bureau, the community has a total area of 2.1 square miles. The community uses ZIP code 48750[5]—assigned to Oscoda with allowance for Au Sable[6]—and has the FIPS code 26-04280.[4]
History[]
Au Sable was first originally settled by Curtis Emerson and James Eldridge, who purchased land along the Au Sable River in 1848. A village was platted in 1849, and a post office was established on 23 September 1856. Elijah Gandy was the first postmaster. The community was replatted in 1867 by the request of Francis B. Smith, and it incorporated as a village in 1872. Au Sable grew to become the largest community in Iosco County, reincorporating as a city in 1889.[7]
The city was decimated by a large forest fire which destroyed much of Au Sable and neighboring Oscoda in 1911. As a sign of Au Sable's decline, the post office was closed on 15 December 1912. The city did not recover, and it surrendered its city charter in 1931, reverting jurisdiction to Au Sable Township.[7] The community was eventually counted as a census-designated place by the United States Census Bureau.[4]
